Manufacturing in Montreal Today
Nearly half of all manufacturing deliveries from Quebec come from Metro Montreal. Some 4,350 firms with over 244,800 employees are located in the region.
The Montreal region is home to a competitive service industry that is the focal point of the region’s economy, specifically in the shipping industry, which has over 300 service companies located in Montreal.
Metro Montreal is the second largest manufacturing center in Canada with a total annual production worth approximately $60 billion.
Agri-Food Industry
The region of Montreal is home to a large and innovative agri-food industry focused on processing and distribution. Over a dozen public and parapublic research centers are based in the region with the majority located in the city of Saint-Hyacinthe, 45 minutes from Montreal. The agri-food industry brings together the following centers:
- INRS – Institut Armand Frappier – Microbiology and Biotechnology, affiliated with the Université du Québec
- Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada ’s (AAFC) Food Research and Development Center (FRDC)
- Institut de recherche et de développement en agroenvironnement (IRDA – Agroecology Research and Development Institute)

- Centre d'innovation technologique agroalimentaire (CINTECH AA – Center for Innovation in Agri-Food Technology)
- McGill University ’s Dairy Product Research Group
- A dozen research centers at the Faculté de médecine vétérinaire (FMV – Faculty of Veterinary Medicine) of the Université de Montréal, including the Institut de biotechnique vétérinaire et alimentaire (IBVA – Veterinary and Food Biotechnology Institute) and the Chaire de recherche en salubrité des viandes (Meat Safety Research Chair).
