Education

In Québec, all children between the ages 6 and 16 must attend school. The school year, which lasts approximately 180 days, begings during late August or early September and ends in June. The Québec school system ranges from kindergarten to university levels. Education is free until the university level inclusively for residents of Québec and the children of foreign workers who hold a Québec work permit. Seperate school boards serve the French-speaking and English-speaking communities.

There are also a number of private schools certified by Quebec’s Department of Education, Sports and Recreation (MELS). Private Schools charge tuition fees and set admission conditions that may vary from one institution to another.

Temporary foreign workers have the option of sending their children to French or English institutions for the duration of their stay. Children registered in the French-speaking public sector who are not fluent in French will be given free welcome classes to facilitate their integration into regular courses.
