Elementary and High School Education

Preschool or kindergarten prepares children for elementary school. This year helps children through  a stimulating learning environment and encourages new skills that will facilitate their success in school. Although preschool is not mandatory, 98% of eligible students attend. Preschool education is available all over Québec, both in public and private schools.

  • Elementary Education

Whether or not they have attended preschool, all children over the age of six must be registered in a primary school. Classes that take children with learning difficulties are also available.
  • High School Education

After elementary school, children must continue their studies at the secondary level. Two possibilities exist:

  • General secondary education lasts five years and opens the door to post-graduate studies. Students earn a high school diploma at graduation.
  • Vocational secondary programs lead students directly to the job market. Students earn a secondary school vocational diploma upon completion of such programs.
