| Montréal is the first city in North America to be designated a UNESCO City of Design by the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity. Buenos Aires and Berlin have also received this honor in the past. The launch of the City of Montréal’s design action plan in 2005, the presence of the prestigious Institute of Design Montréal (IDM) and the decision by the 2 founding members of the International Design Alliance (IDA) to establish their headquarters in Montréal are some of the many factors that make Montréal a leader in design. Benoît Labonté, Mayor of the Borough of Ville-Marie and City of Montréal Executive Committee member responsible for design, launched the city’s proposal. The City of Design Certificate was presented by Mr. Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, during his visit to Montréal to attend the International Economic Forum of the Americas. |

| En rejoignant Buenos Aires et Berlin, Montréal devient la première ville en Amérique du Nord à intégrer le réseau des Villes de design de l’Alliance globale de l’unesco. Le lancement du plan d’action en design par la Ville de Montréal en 2005, la présence du prestigieux Institut de design de Montréal (IDM) et l’obtention du siège des OI Icsid et Icograda (voir ci-dessus) comptent parmi les nombreux facteurs qui font de Montréal un chef de file en matière de design. Montréal, Antwerp, Glasgow, Lisbon, Saint-Étienne, Stockholm and New York have succeeded in positioning themselves as “New Design Cities” by developing and implementing policies and programs that promote quality design on their territory. Based on case studies, the book analyzes the actions and events that have shaped the process driving the emergence of these seven cities.

Si Montréal, Anvers, Glasgow, Lisbonne, Saint-Étienne, Stockholm et New York ont réussi à se positionner comme «nouvelles villes de design», c’est qu’elles ont élaboré et mis en place des politiques et programmes favorisant la qualité du design sur leur territoire. Construit autour d’études de cas, cet ouvrage analyse les actions et les événements à l’origine de l’émergence de ces sept villes.

The result of a private/public partnership, Montréal International receives the combined support of the Government of Canada, the Government of Québec, the Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal (Montréal Metropolitan Community), the City of Montréal, as well as 120 institutionnal and private members. The organization’s mission is to contribute to economic development in Metro Montréal and to enhance its international status. The International Organizations Department at Montréal International is devoted exclusively to relations with international organizations and, among others, offers them hospitality services to assist them and their foreign personnel in settling in the Montréal region.
Issu d’un partenariat public-privé, Montréal International est appuyé par le gouvernement du Canada, le gouvernement du Québec, la Communauté métropolitaine de Montréal, la Ville de Montréal ainsi que ses 120 membres institutionnels et privés. L’organisme a pour but de contribuer au développement économique de la région de Montréal et d’accroître son rayonnement international. La vice-présidence Organisations internationales de Montréal International est consacrée exclusivement aux relations avec les organisations internationales; elle leur offre entre autres des services d’accueil qui facilitent leur installation et l’intégration de leur personnel étranger.
