At the heart of Québec’s energy transition
For more than 50 years, Hitachi Energy has been a key player in Québec’s energy ecosystem. Its Varennes facility is the only site in Canada capable of manufacturing large power transformers, while also hosting a research centre dedicated to artificial intelligence applications for the energy sector.
These transformers play a critical role in the efficient transmission and distribution of electricity. They support the integration of renewable energy sources, strengthen grid interconnections, power data centres and help accelerate transportation electrification.
In 2024 and 2025, Hitachi Energy announced major investments in its Varennes operations, nearly tripling annual production capacity. The company is also establishing a transformer testing laboratory expected to be operational by 2027, further enhancing the site’s autonomy, competitiveness and long-term growth.
