Greater Montréal’s economic promotion agency
For more than 20 years, Montréal International (MI) has contributed to building Greater Montréal’s international reputation and prosperity by acting as a driving force for economic development.
Its mandate is to attract direct foreign investment, international organizations, entrepreneurs, talented workers and international students to the region. Our team consists of 80 professionals with specialized expertise, including in the divisions of Talent Montréal (attracting international talent) and I choose Montréal (attracting and retaining international students). Montréal International also leads the Contact MTL initiative, a network of ambassadors for Greater Montréal that aims to spread the word around the world about what’s going on in the region’s economy.
A public-private partnership
Created in 1996, Montréal International is a non-profit organization that is financed by the private sector, the governments of Canada and Québec, the Montréal Metropolitan Community and the City of Montréal.
Since its founding, MI has contributed to attracting direct foreign investment projects valued at $18 billion, leading to the creation or maintenance of 71,000 jobs. We have also played a key role in the decisions of half of the city’s 66 international organizations to establish themselves here, as well as in attracting and retaining more than 11,000 strategic international workers.
An award-winning strategy for attracting FDI
At a time of growing competition among large cities, Montréal International is succeeding in promoting the city’s key sectors. In recognition of these efforts, Greater Montréal was crowned by FDI Magazine (Financial Times) as the winner of the 2018 award for best foreign direct investment strategy in the Digital Economies of the Future ranking.
“Now more than ever, the growth of an open economy like Greater Montréal’s depends on looking beyond national borders to attract capital and talent. This is precisely why Montréal International targets leading-edge sectors and priority regions to attract the most innovative companies and the most influential international organizations as well as the most skilled and creative international talent.”
